Huizhou bamboo carving intangible cultural heritage inheritor
Zhang Hongyun
She and her husband Hong Jianhua, who are also inheritors of the craft, share a deep bond and are also guardians of the Huizhou-style bamboo carving.

In her more than 20 years of practice, Zhang Hongyun has not only collaborated with her husband on the grand works, but also integrated the original relief, round carving and shallow carving techniques of Huizhou bamboo carving, and derived carving techniques such as "deep relief, openwork carving, translucent relief, and multi-layer openwork carving".

The works possess a subtle scholarly air and a refined, understated elegance, combined with a uniquely feminine gentleness and delicacy. They are exceptionally elegant and lifelike, rich in content, profound in meaning, skillful in form, and exquisite in craftsmanship. The high-relief works, in particular, are breathtaking.

As inheritors of this art form, Mr. and Mrs. Hong Jianhua work together to preserve the core values of Huizhou bamboo carving. They maintain the characteristics of traditional craftsmanship while innovating and developing according to social needs, creating more bamboo carvings that are "full of life," allowing the ancient bamboo carving technique to shine brightly in the aesthetic sensibilities of modern people.
