Tsugaru lacquerware, with a 300-year history in Japan, originated in Aomori Prefecture. The cold, humid climate there produces excellent timber. The traditional craft is renowned for its vibrant colors and techniques, utilizing mottled patterns in Kara-zukuri and granular designs in Shichi-ko-zukuri. The production process is extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive, involving complex handcrafted processes such as applying base coat, top coat, and sanding. To protect traditional culture, the use of traditional materials and specific regional makers is limited. Generally, after more than twenty handcrafted steps, small items take about three months to complete, while large items require six months. Pineapple lacquerware was once selected as a tribute item for Kyoto and enjoyed immense popularity.
