Small-leaf sandalwood hexagonal palace lantern
Small-leaf sandalwood hexagonal palace lantern
Height: 85cm; Maximum diameter: 45.5cm
The palace lantern is hexagonal, entirely decorated with openwork carvings. The top is shaped like an official's hat, with six sides carved with intertwined floral patterns, topped with a main hook and secondary hooks at each corner for stability and protection. The central section is pavilion-style, with each corner carved with lifelike lions playing with embroidered balls. A glass panel is framed in the center, surrounded by openwork intertwined floral patterns; six pillars stand outside, each carved with two dragons playing with a pearl. It rests on a base. This rosewood palace lantern is elaborately decorated, exquisitely crafted, delicate, elegant, and luxurious.
Palace lanterns first became popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and were exclusively used in the ancient imperial palace, symbolizing emperors and imperial power. Palace lanterns have specific specifications, and their production process is quite complex, involving nearly a hundred steps, all done by hand. The mortise and tenon joints between the lantern frame and the lantern panels are a distinctive feature of palace lanterns and are also the source of their value.
