Small-leaf sandalwood | Mammoth Ksitigarbha: I vow not to become a Buddha until hell is empty;
Only after all sentient beings are liberated can one attain enlightenment. The materials chosen are meticulously selected: pure sandalwood of a fine, dense color, and mammoth stone of a clear, lustrous sheen. The figure is adorned with gold, holding a staff in the right hand and a flaming pearl in the left, surrounded by the eight auspicious symbols, radiating both dignified grace and compassion.
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is one of the four great Bodhisattvas in Chinese Buddhism. It is said that his place of preaching was Jiuhua Mountain in Anhui Province. According to records such as Volume 20 of the "Biographies of Eminent Monks of the Song Dynasty", Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva was born into the royal family of Silla, with the surname Kim and the given name Gyo-gak. After becoming a monk, he came to China during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty. He lived on Jiuhua Mountain for several decades before passing away. His body remained incorrupt and was placed in a pagoda.
Buddhist scriptures state that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, entrusted by Shakyamuni Buddha, vowed to liberate all sentient beings in the six realms and relieve their suffering before the passing of Shakyamuni and the birth of Maitreya, before attaining Buddhahood. Because Buddhist texts record that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva rescued his mother from suffering in hell several times in past lives and vowed to save all suffering beings, this Bodhisattva is considered to possess the virtues of "great filial piety" and "great vow," and is revered as "Great Vow Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva."
