This maki-e lacquer tea box, made of wood, is entirely black with a domed, bread-shaped lid decorated with floral patterns. It dates back to the Edo period and was restored by the owner of Daigado. Metal rings at the front and back allow for attaching a cord, making it convenient to carry when visiting tea enthusiasts.
"Makie" is a technique where patterns are first drawn on a finished lacquerware piece with a brush, and then gold powder is sprinkled on top. This allows artists to more freely unleash their imagination and create more abstract and contemporary works.
This piece is made with Wajima lacquerware, named after Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture, where it originated during the Edo period. It is an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Wajima lacquerware is durable and has over time become a core representative of Japanese lacquerware. The only lacquerware museum in Japan today is located in Wajima City.
