Horizontal Teapot - Fine Zhu Ni (Red Clay)

The origins of Zisha teapots can be traced back to Fan Li, a minister of the Yue Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn Period, also known as "Tao Zhu Gong," who retired from public life with Xi Shi after achieving great success. This gives us a history of over 2,400 years! However, Zisha teapots were only made from clay after the reign of Emperor Zhengde of the Ming Dynasty. From then on, it became a popular trend, with numerous masters emerging, and the designs and varieties constantly evolving. Over the past five hundred years, many exquisite pieces have been passed down through generations. Today, its craftsmanship is truly ingenious and unparalleled.

The history of the horizontal teapot is long. Hui Mengchen, a teapot maker in the late Ming Dynasty, was famous for his skill in making horizontal teapots. His lotus seed horizontal teapot and hexagonal round-bellied horizontal teapot are among his surviving works, both bearing the inscription "Made by Hui Mengchen of Jingxi." Horizontal teapots are generally made of red clay, a color considered auspicious. They come in many shapes and belong to the "plain ware" category. The size of the teapot is determined by the number of cups (approximately 80 ml and 100 ml), with half-cup, two-cup, four-cup, six-cup, eight-cup, and twelve-cup sizes being the most common (approximately 80 ml for six-cup and 100 ml for eight-cup). To ensure the teapot remains horizontal when immersed in water, the spout and handle must be coordinated, and the weight must be evenly distributed during the shaping process.
