Inlaid "Four Gentlemen" Screen
Inlaid "Four Gentlemen" Screen
Length: 86cm, Width: 26cm, Height: 81.5cm
The screen's frame is a somber, deep color. The central panel, with its latticework borders, is inlaid with a wooden panel depicting floral branches. On a red lacquered background, the "Four Gentlemen" (plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum) are inlaid using the inlay technique, depicting them as broken branches. Their colors are elegant and refined, each accompanied by a poem: "Jade-like Bones and Ice-like Grace," "Fragrance of a Secluded Valley," "Bamboo Brings Peace," and "Chrysanthemums in Late Autumn." The back is painted vermilion with gilded landscapes and pavilions, creating a beautiful effect. The lower panel of the central panel features a relief carving of intertwined lotus blossoms, and the water-retaining brackets are also decorated with lotus patterns and interlocking designs. A bridge-shaped base supports pillars, secured by openwork carved brackets, resulting in a rigorous and stable structure. Placed on a table, it is both beautiful and elegant.
The flowering branch, scientifically known as Dalbergia bariensis, belongs to the rosewood family.
