Appreciation

This teapot seamlessly integrates the elements of light, bamboo, and ribbed textures, possessing a beauty that is both supple and strong, and elegantly crafted with the refined charm of bamboo. With bamboo as its central theme, the teapot features strong, upright bamboo joints and graceful, flowing bamboo leaves. The square body of the teapot subtly incorporates roundness within its squareness, adorned with engraved bamboo joint patterns that are full and rounded. The bamboo-shaped bridge knob and arched lid, along with the square base, body, shoulder, and lid, all stacked in a tower-like structure, create a rhythmic beauty. Internal ribs run continuously from top to bottom; the radiating lines on the surface connect the handle and spout, forming a unified whole. The spout, handle, and knob are all made of bamboo branches, with two bamboo leaves affixed to the left and right sides of the lid below the knob, adding a lively and expressive touch that embodies the spiritual world of literati and scholars.

Small coal kiln Zhu Ni

Source and Scarcity of Clay
Xiaomeiyao Zhu Ni (small coal mine clay) originates from the Xiaomeiyao mining area at the foot of Huanglong Mountain in Yixing, Jiangsu (now closed). The ore layer is shallow and reserves are limited. It is a type of Zhu Ni that was highly regarded during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The clay has a high iron content and fine clay composition. After firing, it exhibits an orange-red to dark red hue and a warm, jade-like texture.

Physical Properties and Firing Difficulty
The shrinkage rate of Xiaomeiyao Zhu Ni clay is as high as 25%-30%, making it one of the varieties with the highest shrinkage rate among Zisha clays. This high shrinkage rate results in an extremely low yield, demanding exceptional skill from the potter. Precise control of the clay sheet thickness and kiln temperature (usually above 1150°C) is required; even slight errors can lead to cracking and deformation. The finished product has a dense body, produces a resonant sound when tapped, and has moderate breathability, making it particularly suitable for brewing highly aromatic oolong tea and rock tea.

Use and Maintenance Effects
After being used and maintained, the small coal kiln Zhu Ni teapot easily forms a patina, and its color becomes deeper and more lustrous, presenting a texture that is "red but not gaudy, smooth but not greasy", and is known as the "aristocrat among clays".

Shaping Challenges
While Zhu Ni clay boasts excellent plasticity, its high shrinkage rate demands an extremely thorough understanding of its properties from the maker. The sharp angles and curved surfaces of the Bamboo Tripod Teapot must be shaped in a single, decisive strike; even slight deviations can affect the overall aesthetic. Masterpieces often demonstrate ingenuity in their attention to detail, such as the textured depiction of bamboo joints and the transition between the tripod legs and the body of the teapot.

Firing Risks
Small coal kiln Zhu Ni clay is sensitive to kiln temperature, requiring experienced kiln workers to control the firing process. Insufficient oxidizing atmosphere in the kiln can lead to a dull color, while excessive firing may cause bubbling or deformation. Successfully fired bamboo tripod teapots have a pure color and a metallic luster on the surface, commonly known as "Zhu Ni Bao Guang" (precious luster of Zhu Ni clay).

Cultural connotations and practical functions

Using vessels to convey the Way : The bamboo tripod teapot integrates natural imagery and humanistic spirit. It not only echoes the literati sentiment of "I would rather eat no meat than live without bamboo", but also conveys reverence for traditional culture through the shape of the tripod.

Bamboo tripod teapots, made with Zhuni clay from small coal mines and imbued with the spirit of bamboo tripod culture, are a fusion of craftsmanship and aesthetics. Their value lies not only in the rarity of the clay but also in the artisan's understanding of nature and adherence to tradition behind each teapot. For collectors, these works are not only excellent utensils for tea ceremonies but also timeless works of art.
