Purple sandalwood inlaid with seahorse ivory, crane and deer symbolizing spring, four-cornered official's hat chair
Purple sandalwood inlaid with seahorse ivory, crane and deer symbolizing spring, four-cornered official's hat chair
Material: Purple sandalwood (scientific name: East African blackwood) inlaid with seahorse teeth
Specifications: Chair: Length: 62cm, Width: 49cm, Length: 110cm
Coffee table: Length: 38cm, Width: 46cm, Total width: 74cm
This chair is a modified version of the original: a huanghuali (Chinese rosewood) official's hat chair with cranes and deer symbolizing spring, included in Zhang Jinhua's *Ming-style Furniture of Yangzhou*, p. 88. This chair shares the same structure and shape as the traditional Suzhou-style official's hat chair with four protruding ends, but is more exquisite and ornate. The backrest is made of mortise and tenon joints, divided into three sections. The upper section features a hand-carved crane holding a peach in its beak, while the middle section depicts a deer with a lively and graceful expression. The lower section features a dragon with its head turned back, seemingly recounting a legendary tale. The seat is woven rattan. A highlight of this chair is the armrests, which are shaped like vases with bamboo-joint carvings symbolizing peace and good fortune. The seat's central ridge line is flanked by curved sections, a classic Suzhou-style "civil and military line." With its continuous front and back support, meticulous material selection, and high-standard craftsmanship, this chair is truly a treasure for collectors and heirlooms.
