The entire box is covered in black lacquer, its surface as smooth and mirror-like. It is decorated with a painted depiction of an ancient plum tree, its blossoms blooming in the cold winter. Below, pine branches and bamboo complete the scene, representing the "Three Friends of Winter" – pine, bamboo, and plum. The interior is finished in rich, vibrant vermilion lacquer.
