Two lacquered and gold-plated covered bowls

These two covered bowls are Wajima lacquerware bowls, crafted using black and red lacquer and gold-painting techniques, decorated with floral and butterfly designs. "Shenjin" is a unique technique of Wajima lacquerware, involving meticulously carving the design bit by bit onto the finished lacquerware piece using extremely fine tools, followed by sprinkling gold powder on top. Shenjin is a highly difficult technique requiring immense patience. Wajima lacquerware primarily uses wooden blanks and involves over 70 meticulous steps in its production.
Wajima lacquerware, named after Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture, which originated in the Edo period, is an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Known for its durability, Wajima lacquerware has long been a core representative of Japanese lacquerware. The only lacquerware museum in Japan today is located in Wajima City.
