The gaiwan (lidded bowl) originated from Imari, an island in Japan with a shared heritage with China; the small cup comes from Jingdezhen, where kilns have been burning for a thousand years.
The objects are quiet, serene, and natural, neither flamboyant nor noisy.
Gaiwan (lidded bowl):
This Japanese Imari covered bowl is an antique. I believe that the elegance of Japanese bowls and cups is unparalleled, so I felt an instant connection with it. Due to its low and stable shape, it is particularly convenient and easy to use with contemporary Chinese tea brewing methods.
The Japanese gaiwan (lidded bowl) originated in the Azuchi and Momoyama periods (corresponding to the late Ming Dynasty). In the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, the Japanese gaiwan shape was introduced to China, coinciding with the popularity of the Chinese tea-drinking method (brewing tea). Gradually, it evolved into the (Sancai) gaiwan of the late Kangxi period in China, which is still in use today.
The exchange of porcelain patterns and shapes between China and Japan has never stopped, with intricate mutual imitation and reference, all of which are inherited from one source.
