Japanese Wajima lacquerware, golden flower and grass paper box

Japanese Wajima lacquerware, golden flower and grass paper box
Length: 22.5cm, Width: 29.5cm, Total Height: 5.2cm
This Japanese Wajima-style box with gold-leaf floral design employs Wajima's unique "gold-leaf" technique. The exterior is finished with vermilion lacquer, while the interior is lacquered black. The lid is decorated with chrysanthemums and floral patterns carved using the gold-leaf technique, then inlaid with gold. The floral branches are delicate and intricately detailed, while butterfly motifs add a touch of dynamism. The overall composition is complex yet orderly, radiating a brilliant golden light.
"Wajima lacquerware" originated in the Kanbun era of the Edo period in Japan. It is the name of lacquerware produced in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The lacquer used in Wajima lacquerware is made with high-quality diatomaceous earth (Wajima base powder) produced in Wajima, which makes the base material sturdy and durable. If patterns are carved on the surface of the lacquerware and gold or silver powder is embedded in it, it is called "sunken gold".
