Pineapple lacquer covered bowl, 1963 (Showa 37)

This pineapple lacquer covered bowl, made in 1963 (Showa 37), features three colors: gold, red, and black, exhibiting a luxurious and varied appearance. Pineapple lacquer, also known as rhinoceros-skin lacquer, tiger-skin lacquer, or birch lacquer, is produced using a highly refined technique. A thick layer of lacquer is applied to create an uneven surface, followed by several layers of different colored lacquer. Finally, the surface is polished smooth, and the raised areas are ground down to reveal the cross-section of the lacquer layer, displaying patterns resembling natural objects such as clouds or pine scales.
