Japanese Tsugaru lacquer (pineapple lacquer) tea box
Length: 24cm Width: 21cm Height: 4cm
Tsugaru lacquer, with a 300-year history in Japan, originated in Aomori Prefecture. The cold, humid climate there produces excellent timber. The traditional craft is renowned for its vibrant colors and diverse techniques, utilizing mottled patterns in Kara-zukuri and granular designs in Shichi-ko-zukuri. The production process is extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive, involving complex handcrafted processes such as applying base coat, top coat, and sanding. Furthermore, to protect traditional culture, the use of traditional materials and specific regional makers is limited. Generally, after more than twenty handcrafted steps, small items take about three months to complete, while large items require up to six months.
Pineapple lacquerware was once selected as a tribute item by Kyoto and became very popular.
The tea box features a bread-shaped top and two internal compartments, making it highly practical. The entire surface is lacquered, with flowing colors that resemble a starry sky, reminiscent of pineapple lacquer, and the body is thick and substantial. The interior and bottom are lacquered black, demonstrating meticulous craftsmanship.
