Iron-red enamel originated in the Song Dynasty and was a precursor to various overglaze colors. It was later used in the red enamel of the Wanli period in the Ming Dynasty.

In the early Qing Dynasty, the glaze was applied using the blowing glaze method, also known as "coral red glaze". Iron red was used extensively in the Qing Dynasty, generally on wucai (five-color) and doucai (enamel-painted) wares.

The iron-red plum blossom covered bowl has a delicate clay body, a regular and dignified shape, and meticulous finishing. It requires three firings: a high-temperature firing to create a white porcelain body, followed by applying iron-red pigment and firing at a low temperature, then applying gold ice patterns on the iron-red pigment and firing it again to complete the piece. The iron-red color is neither as vibrant as red nor as bright as yellow, but rather falls perfectly between the two, presenting a unique beauty.
