Made of jujube wood with a classic black base lacquer, this tea tray features vermilion peaks painted using the traditional Japanese "maki-e" technique. The peaks are lightly sprinkled with gold, resembling the shape of Mount Fuji, with clouds swirling around the base. Different layers of gold or mother-of-pearl are applied, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. The base is finely sprinkled with gold dust, creating a shimmering, luxurious effect. The inner lacquer has a silver sheen, its brilliance subtly enhanced. It is paired with a round, black lacquered Wajima-style tea tray, its lacquer smooth and reflective, featuring a straight, flat rim and silver trim, exuding a serene beauty.
Maki-e is one of the lacquerware techniques that originated in the Nara period. It involves adding gold and silver flakes to lacquer liquid, and then polishing it after it dries to reveal its gold and silver luster, making it extremely luxurious. Sometimes, mother-of-pearl and silver wire are used to inlay flowers, birds, insects, or auspicious patterns.
