Jao Tsung-i (August 9, 1917 – February 6, 2018), born in Chao'an, Guangdong, with ancestral roots in Meixian, Guangdong, was a sinologist, classicist, archaeologist, paleographer, translator, writer, calligrapher, painter, Dunhuang scholar, and cultural historian. He was a member of the French Academy of Far Eastern Studies, a foreign member of the French Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-lettres, and a member of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences. Before his death, he was an honorary professor at the Institute of Chinese Culture and Department of Fine Arts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, an honorary professor at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a member of the Central Research Institute of Culture and History, and the president of the Xiling Seal Society.
